The Scope of this project was the replacement of the chillers, cooling towers, and associated pumps, piping, controls, electrical control and distribution system, and appurtenances.
In order to better assess the requirements for this design, two different load analyses were conducted. The first load calculation was based upon the existing operation condition of twelve months. The second calculation was based on the first one and upon the future condition which contemplates the increase of the miscellaneous equipment load, lighting load and ventilation.
In order to determine the most cost-effective alternate, cost estimates and LLCA were conducted to compare three alternatives: air-cooled screw chillers, water-cooled screw chillers and water-cooled centrifugal chillers with variable speed drive (VSD).
The existing mechanical chiller room was designed to meet the requirements of AHSRAE Standard 15: Safety Code for Mechanical Refrigeration. The condenser water treatment system was replaced with new, fully automatic water treatment system. A new motor control center was provided for all of the mechanical and ancillary equipment with a new feeder from the existing switchgear.
